Aromatherapy

My love for all things natural prompted me to study Aromatherapy with Shirley Price International College of Aromatherapy in the UK.  Aromatherapy works on a holistic level, making use of two of our most dominant senses; those of touch and smell. The effect of touch has a profound psychological and physiological impact on both the health of mind and body. Touch is a basic behavioural need in much the same way as breathing is a basic physical need. Giving massage using pure essential oils in a carrier base is a truly preventative therapy as it induces a state of relaxation by easing muscular tension. Not only is muscular tension directly related to physical pain but often it relates to psychological tension and repressed emotions.

The olfactory system, which is the sensory system for smell, can differentiate between 10,000 and 100,000 different smells – and remember each and every one of them. When using pure essential oils in aromatherapy you inhale the scent of a particular oil and it is immediately transported through your olfactory system directly to the limbic system in your brain. The limbic system controls your moods, emotions, stress levels, and memories. It also impacts your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and hormone balance.

Your sense of smell is strongly linked to your memories and subconscious. A particular smell can trigger a memory from many years in the past.
